My Life as a Fledgling Rock Snob: The Story of Record Geek Heaven

One of my early geek-out sessions

My name is Cameron Joel Hawk. I am 28 years old. I am the youngest son of Tom and Tammi Hawk, who raised me in Manhattan, KS. Quite ornery as a child, my parents often had to get creative to make me sit still, and as soon as they noticed how much I liked and responded to MTV, they had to let me watch it. Early on, they wouldn’t actually allow me to watch the channel live; they would tape long portions of it and edit out anything they deemed unfit for my eyes or ears. This eventually led to several viewings of a hacked-up “Flashdance”, and possibly a slightly disjointed worldview.

So, while other kids were watching Sesame Street and singing songs about the alphabet and multiplication tables, I was watching “The Making of Thriller” and crushing on Downtown Julie Brown, and later, crushing on Kennedy and staying up late on Sunday nights watching Liquid Television, 120 Minutes, and Headbanger’s Ball with Ricki Rachtman. At some point, I realized I was taking in a lot of stuff, and that I had several varying opinions about these things. Eventually, it all just came gushing out, and it really hasn’t stopped since. It came to a point where I had to write something, because it was much more preferable to getting into some stupid argument with someone, which was becoming more frequent by the day.

When I was about 12 years old, I started publishing a “newsletter”. It was called “Cam’s Rock Picks” or something geeky like that. There was a Streetside Records in Manhattan for a long time, and it eventually became like a second home to me. But in those early years, I was the little geeky kid that always came in and rambled on incessantly about shit. At the time, I thought I was well-liked by a lot of the employees, but I learned later that most of them thought I was really annoying. I was just really relentless about learning and finding good music; plus, I think it bothered a lot of them when I occasionally outsmarted them in rock trivia. “Who is this little bastard kid?” they probably thought. Anyway, regardless of what they may have thought, they let me leave my newsletter at their counter, and that was a big step for me as far as becoming confident enough to share these various opinions. I really miss Streetside–it’s a Buffalo Wild Wings now, and every time I pass it when I am in Manhattan, I have to hang my head and sigh. It’s SO SAD.

So yeah, Record Geek Heaven is basically an evolved version of that first geeky newsletter. I think it has a lot to do with why the word “Geek” is even in there–it’s a little bit of a “Revenge of the Nerds”-esque, we’re-taking-this-word-back kind of thing. I think as a word, it sums up the equal amounts of dedication and perhaps zealousness that make up this project. Thanks for reading, by the way!
